Lip filler recovery is faster than most enquirers expect — a few days of mild swelling, sometimes a small bruise, and you’re presentable for normal life. But “presentable” isn’t the same as “settled”. The actual final result of your lip filler appointment isn’t visible for 2–3 weeks, and good aftercare in the first 48 hours makes a meaningful difference to bruising and result quality.

The day of treatment

0–4 hours after: significant swelling. Lips will look noticeably bigger than the final result. This is normal and not the outcome — it’s the body’s mild inflammatory response to the procedure plus the product before it integrates.

Aftercare during this window:

  • Apply gentle ice (clean cloth, not directly on skin, 10 min on / 10 min off) to reduce swelling
  • Sleep slightly elevated tonight
  • Avoid hot drinks for 4–6 hours (heat amplifies swelling)
  • Avoid touching, pressing, massaging the lips beyond gentle ice

Day 1 (the day after treatment)

The peak of visible swelling usually lands the day after, not the day of. Some patients experience asymmetric swelling — one side temporarily appearing fuller than the other — which is normal and resolves.

  • Continue ice if needed
  • No alcohol (alcohol thins blood and amplifies bruising)
  • No exercise (heat and elevated heart-rate amplify swelling and bruise risk)
  • No saunas, hot yoga, hot showers
  • Be gentle with eating — soft foods are easier

Days 2–4

Swelling reduces visibly each day. Bruising — if it appeared — is usually most visible at days 2–3 and fades through days 4–7. Most bruises can be camouflaged with concealer once initial settling has occurred.

  • Resume normal eating
  • Light exercise OK from day 3 if no bruising; defer if bruised
  • Sun protection on lips (SPF lip balm)
  • No lip exfoliation, retinoid lip products, or aggressive lip scrubs for 7 days

Days 5–7

Swelling almost fully resolved. Lips begin to soften and integrate with surrounding tissue. The result starts to look more natural.

  • Resume normal lip products (avoid only specific irritants — see below)
  • Resume normal exercise
  • Start massaging gently only if your clinic recommends it — some clinicians prefer no massage at all; some prescribe specific massage for asymmetry

Weeks 2–3

The product fully integrates with surrounding tissue. By the 2–3 week mark, what you see is what the result actually is. This is when most clinics book the post-treatment review.

Things that delay healing

  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and similar blood-thinning supplements (stop 5 days before treatment if your GP agrees)
  • Alcohol the night before or 24h after
  • Vigorous exercise within 48h
  • Heat exposure (hot showers, saunas, hot yoga) within 24–48h
  • Cold-sore reactivation if you have a history (discuss antiviral pre-treatment)

When to call your clinic

Call urgently for:

  • Severe pain (not normal mild tenderness)
  • White, mottled, or persistently pale areas of skin around the lips (possible vascular complication — rare but emergency)
  • Asymmetry that doesn’t reduce with the swelling
  • Significant lumps that are visible or palpable beyond 1–2 weeks
  • Cold-sore outbreak after treatment

A reputable Adelaide cosmetic clinic provides emergency-line contact details with your treatment paperwork.

Adelaide-specific factors

Summer treatment requires extra sun protection on lips for 1–2 weeks after — Adelaide’s UV index averages “very high” through the warmer months and unprotected post-treatment lips can pigment unevenly. Lip balm with SPF 30+ daily, especially mid-day.

Winter dry-air heating amplifies post-treatment lip dryness; apply a hydrating balm regularly for the first week.
