Skin and laser treatments cover hair reduction, pigmentation, redness, scarring, texture and resurfacing. Results vary from person to person, and the device used, the settings chosen and your skin type all affect both the outcome and the risk of side effects such as burns or pigment changes.

What “skin and laser” covers

Five families of treatment fall under this category:

  • Laser hair removal — diode, alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers used for long-term hair reduction on the face and body.
  • IPL (intense pulsed light) — broad-spectrum light used for some hair reduction, pigmentation and redness concerns.
  • Skin needling and microneedling — controlled micro-channels in the skin intended to stimulate the skin’s healing response. Sometimes combined with radiofrequency energy (RF microneedling).
  • Chemical peels — controlled exfoliation using acids of different depths (such as glycolic, salicylic, lactic or TCA) for texture, tone and some acne-related concerns.
  • Pigmentation and vascular treatments — lasers designed for sun-related pigmentation, broken capillaries and some types of facial redness.

Each has its own page below.

Why device choice matters

Two providers can both offer “laser hair removal” using quite different machines. The same applies to IPL, skin needling devices and peels. At consultation it is reasonable to ask:

  • The brand and model of the device being used
  • Why that device is appropriate for your skin type, hair type or concern
  • How many sessions are likely to be recommended and why
  • What a realistic outcome looks like for you, including the chance of little or no improvement

Some lower-cost “laser” offers use IPL machines rather than lasers. IPL can be suitable for some people but is generally less suitable for darker skin types. Ask what is being used and why.

Skin types matter

Adelaide’s population includes a wide range of skin types — from very fair (Fitzpatrick I–II) to olive (III–IV) to darker skin (V–VI). The appropriate device and settings differ for each, and the wrong choice can cause pigmentation changes. A thorough consultation includes an assessment of your skin type and medical history.

Risks and suitability

All skin and laser treatments carry risks. Possible side effects include redness, swelling, blistering, burns, infection, scarring and lighter or darker patches of skin. Some people are not suitable for certain treatments — for example during pregnancy, with active skin infections or flares, with some medical conditions, or when using some medicines. Recovery varies; your practitioner will explain what to expect. Results are not the same for everyone.

Before you book

  • Check the practitioner’s registration on the Ahpra public register where they are a registered health practitioner, and ask about their registration type and training with the device.

  • Ask for the total cost, including any course, in writing.
  • Take time to think before you commit — you don’t need to decide on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Which skin treatment is right for my concern?

As a general guide, laser hair removal is for unwanted hair, IPL for sun-related pigmentation and redness, skin needling for texture and some acne scarring, and chemical peels for dullness, congestion and mild pigmentation. Your practitioner will recommend options, including skincare-only approaches or doing nothing, after assessing your skin.

Why does skin type matter for laser and IPL?

Lasers and IPL target pigment, so darker skin types have a higher risk of burns and pigment changes. The device, wavelength and settings need to suit your skin type, and a patch test is often recommended first.

How much do skin and laser treatments cost in Adelaide?

Indicative ranges are laser hair removal $60–$220 per area per session, IPL $200–$400 per full-face session, skin needling $250–$400 per face session, RF microneedling $500–$1,200 per session, and light chemical peels $120–$250. Costs are confirmed in writing after assessment.
