Lip Consultation Adelaide

Concerned about lip shape, symmetry, dryness or lines around the mouth? Request a lip consultation in Adelaide with a registered practitioner.

Lips are a small area that can feel like a big concern. A lip consultation is where a registered health practitioner looks at what's bothering you — shape, symmetry, dryness, lines around the mouth or change with age — explains which options may be suitable, and talks through risks, costs and alternatives, including leaving things as they are.

DermaFox Aesthetics arranges consultations and is not itself a medical or cosmetic practitioner. Any treatment decision is made with the registered health practitioner who assesses you.

Common lip concerns

People raise a range of concerns at a lip consultation:

  • Shape — the outline of the lips, the balance between the upper and lower lip, or how the lips sit with the rest of the face.
  • Symmetry — most lips are slightly uneven, and for some people the difference is more noticeable.
  • Dryness and texture — chapping, flaking or rough lips, which are common in Adelaide’s dry summers and windy winters.
  • Lines around the mouth — fine vertical lines above the upper lip that can make lipstick bleed.
  • Age-related change — lips and the surrounding skin change gradually over time.

Lip care and sun protection

Lips have thin skin and very little natural protection from the sun. Before any other option, it’s worth looking at the basics:

  • Use a lip balm with broad-spectrum SPF and reapply it during the day, especially outdoors.
  • Keep lips moisturised, and avoid licking or picking at dry lips.
  • Wear a broad-brimmed hat in the sun.
  • If you smoke, quitting can help the skin around your mouth as well as your general health.

Get any lip sore, scaly patch or colour change that doesn’t heal checked by your GP. Sun damage to the lips can need medical assessment, not cosmetic care.

What’s assessed

At a lip consultation, expect the practitioner to:

  • Take your health history, including medicines, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, cold sore history and previous cosmetic treatments
  • Look at your lips at rest, while you talk and smile, and in profile
  • Assess the lips in proportion to your nose, chin and the rest of your face
  • Ask what bothers you, why now, and what you’d like to change

Why proportion and realistic expectations matter

Lips are judged in relation to the whole face, not on their own. What looks balanced on one face can look out of place on another. A good practitioner will talk honestly about what suits your proportions, may suggest smaller changes than you expected, and may advise against any treatment if it isn’t in your interests.

It’s also worth thinking about why you want a change. Practitioners are expected to consider whether a cosmetic procedure is appropriate for you, including whether there are underlying concerns such as body image distress, and to give you time to decide.

Options that may be discussed

Depending on your assessment, options may include:

  • Lip care and sun protection — the foundation for lip health.
  • Skin treatments for the skin around the mouth — see our skin and laser treatments hub.
  • Options that can only be discussed in a consultation — some options involve prescription medicines, which can only be considered after an in-person consultation with an appropriately qualified, registered health practitioner.
  • Referral to a GP, dermatologist or other specialist where appropriate.
  • No treatment — always a valid choice.

Risks and suitability

Every cosmetic procedure carries risk, and results vary from person to person. Depending on the option, risks can include swelling, bruising, tenderness, asymmetry, infection, cold sore flare-ups in people prone to them, an outcome you don’t like and, rarely, serious complications. Ask your practitioner to explain the specific risks of each option and what would happen if a complication occurred. Recovery varies; your practitioner will explain what to expect.

Some options may not suit you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active cold sore or skin infection, have certain medical conditions, or take certain medicines. People under 18 are not eligible for a cosmetic lip consultation.

Before you book

  • Check the practitioner on the Ahpra public register and ask what type of registration they hold.
  • Ask about every option, including lip care and no treatment.
  • Ask for costs in writing, including any follow-up appointments.
  • Take time to think before deciding.
  • Cosmetic consultations are for adults (18+).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a lip consultation cost?

Requesting a consultation is free and there's no obligation. Any consultation fee is set by the practitioner and confirmed before you book, and treatment costs are only quoted in writing after you've been assessed.

Can you tell me which product will be used?

That's only discussed with the practitioner during the consultation, because prescription medicines can't be advertised to the public in Australia.

Can I book a lip consultation if I'm under 18?

No. Cosmetic consultations are for adults aged 18 and over.

Why do my lips look thinner than they used to?

Lips change with age, along with the skin and structures around the mouth. Sun exposure and smoking can also affect the lips and the skin around them. A practitioner can assess what is contributing in your case.

What if I bring a photo of lips I like?

Photos can help explain what you're drawn to, but every face is different. A practitioner should talk honestly about what suits your proportions and what is realistic, and may advise against changes that wouldn't suit you.
