Three depths, different uses

Light peels — alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, mandelic), beta-hydroxy acid (salicylic) and enzyme-based peels. Commonly used for surface dullness, mild pigmentation and mild acne. Redness and flaking for a few days are common.

Medium-depth peels — such as TCA (trichloroacetic acid) or Jessner’s solution. Used for moderate pigmentation, fine lines, some acne scarring and sun damage. Visible peeling and a period of increased sun sensitivity are expected.

Deep peels — performed in specialist settings and not commonly offered. They involve substantial recovery and significant risks, and are only appropriate for some people.

What chemical peels don’t reliably treat

• Deeper lines or facial volume loss — if this is your main concern, a facial consultation is the place to discuss all suitable options, including doing nothing
• Deep “ice-pick” acne scarring — other approaches such as skin needling may be discussed
• Broken capillaries and redness — vascular laser or IPL may be discussed instead

Skin types and peels

People with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) have a higher risk of pigment changes after peels, particularly deeper ones. Ingredient choice, strength and skin preparation are adjusted accordingly. A skin-type assessment should always be part of the consultation.

What a peel appointment looks like

A light peel appointment is usually under an hour, followed by a few days of possible redness and flaking. A medium-depth peel involves more noticeable redness and peeling over the following week or so, and increased sun sensitivity for several weeks. Recovery varies; your practitioner will explain what to expect.

Strict sun protection (broad-spectrum SPF 50+, hat, shade) is essential afterwards. Adelaide’s summer UV levels are often very high to extreme, and sun exposure after a peel increases the risk of pigment changes.
