Skin Needling vs RF Microneedling — Adelaide Comparison Guide

Adelaide comparison of standard skin needling and radiofrequency (RF) microneedling — when each is appropriate, expected results, sessions and cost.

Standard skin needling and radiofrequency (RF) microneedling do similar things by different mechanisms — they’re both controlled-injury collagen-induction treatments, but the depth, intensity, and outcome profile differ meaningfully. Choosing between them depends on what you’re treating.

What standard skin needling does

Standard skin needling — sometimes called dermapen or microneedling — uses fine needles oscillating to create micro-channels in the skin. The body’s wound-healing response triggers collagen and elastin remodelling.

Best for:

  • General skin maintenance and quality
  • Mild texture concerns (fine lines, surface roughness, mild crepiness)
  • Pore size reduction
  • Light pigmentation
  • “Glow” treatments

Sessions: 4–6, 4–6 weeks apart. Cost: $250–$400/session in Adelaide.

What RF microneedling adds

RF microneedling combines needling with radiofrequency energy delivered at depth. The needles deliver controlled heat into the deeper dermis, triggering significantly stronger collagen-stimulating effect than standard needling alone.

Best for:

  • Acne scarring (atrophic/depressed scars) — the strongest evidence-based treatment for textural improvement
  • Skin laxity and tightening — particularly mid-face, neck, and jowl areas
  • Deeper textural concerns — stretch marks, surgical scars
  • Wrinkles requiring deeper collagen stimulation

Sessions: 2–4, 6–8 weeks apart. Cost: $500–$1,200/session in Adelaide.

How to decide

Choose standard skin needling if:

  • Your skin concerns are mild
  • You’re maintenance-focused rather than corrective-focused
  • You prefer multiple lighter sessions
  • Budget per-session matters more than total course

Choose RF microneedling if:

  • You have moderate-to-deeper acne scarring
  • You’re treating skin laxity
  • You want fewer sessions with stronger per-session effect
  • Stretch marks are the target

Combine both if:

  • A complex picture (e.g. acne scarring + skin maintenance) — alternate modalities, or run RF as the corrective course followed by standard needling for ongoing maintenance

Skin-type considerations

RF microneedling has a meaningfully better safety profile than ablative laser for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV-VI). The RF energy doesn’t depend on melanin targeting (unlike laser), so post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk is lower. This makes it a good option for darker-skin patients seeking textural improvement.

Standard needling is also safe across all Fitzpatrick types when properly delivered.

Adelaide pricing context

  • Standard needling face: $250–$400/session, $1,200–$1,800 for 6
  • RF microneedling face: $500–$1,200/session, $1,800–$3,500 for 3
  • Combined approach (RF + standard maintenance): individual modality pricing
