HydraFacial — What to Expect at Your First Treatment (Adelaide)
Adelaide HydraFacial first-time guide — what happens during the appointment, sensations, downtime, and how soon you'll see results.

A first-time Adelaide HydraFacial appointment runs 30–60 minutes depending on the tier, and unlike most treatments at the medical end of skin clinics, there’s effectively no downtime. Here’s what to actually expect, sensation by sensation, step by step.
Before the appointment
- No active retinoid (tretinoin, Retin-A) for 3 days prior
- No active acids (glycolic, salicylic) the night before
- No sunburn or active rosacea flare
- Arrive with clean skin (no makeup, or expect cleanse time included)
At the appointment
Step 0 — consultation and skin assessment (5–10 min). The dermal therapist reviews your goal, looks at your skin, picks the appropriate solutions for your skin type. They might Fitzpatrick-test, take a quick set of photos for before/after.
Step 1 — cleanse and peel (8–10 min). The HydraFacial vortex tip glides across the skin, exfoliating with water plus a mild peel solution selected for your skin (usually a glycolic+salicylic blend; gentler options for sensitive skin). The sensation: cool, buzzy, slightly tingling. Not uncomfortable. The tip pulls dead skin cells, oil, and surface debris.
Step 2 — extract and hydrate (10–15 min). The vortex tip switches mode and applies suction-based extraction, simultaneously delivering a hydrating peptide solution. The sensation: a stronger pulling feel, especially around the nose, chin, and forehead where pores tend to be more congested. Less painful than traditional manual extractions.
Step 3 — fuse and protect (8–12 min). Final infusion of antioxidant, peptide, and hyaluronic-acid serums under controlled vortex pressure. The sensation: cool and soothing.
Optional step 4 — LED light therapy (10–20 min). If your tier includes LED, you’ll lie under a panel for red (calming, anti-inflammatory) or blue (acne) light. Eyes covered with protective shields. Mild warmth, no discomfort.
Optional step 5 — lymphatic massage (5–10 min). On the deluxe tier, a lymphatic-drainage massage finishes the protocol.
Final — moisturiser, SPF, and you’re done.
Immediately after
- Skin looks brighter and more hydrated. The “glow” is real and immediate.
- Some patients have mild redness for 1–2 hours; resolves quickly.
- Makeup can be applied immediately if needed.
- Skin feels smoother to the touch.
Day of and day after
- Hydration boost lasts 5–7 days
- Pore clarity visible
- Skin tolerates makeup application better than usual
Downtime considerations
There’s effectively no downtime, but for the first 24 hours:
- Avoid retinoids and active acids
- Use gentle skincare
- Apply SPF (always, but especially after exfoliation)
- No sauna, hot yoga, or vigorous sweating immediately after
Day 7 onward
The treatment effects gradually fade over 2–4 weeks. For ongoing benefit, monthly sessions are typical.
What HydraFacial doesn’t do
- Doesn’t significantly change pigmentation (IPL or peels do this)
- Doesn’t reduce wrinkles meaningfully (anti-wrinkle injections do this)
- Doesn’t address scarring (skin needling does this)
- Doesn’t substitute for ongoing skincare routine
It’s a high-quality maintenance modality. Used as such, it’s excellent.
Adelaide-specific tips
- Pre-summer (October–November) is HydraFacial’s busiest period in Adelaide medi-spas — book ahead
- Pre-event treatment (wedding, photos, holiday): book 1–3 days before, not on the day, to allow any minor redness to settle
- Combine with dermaplaning for additional surface refinement
