Confused about whether you need dermal filler or anti-wrinkle injections? An Adelaide guide to which treatment addresses which concern, and when both work together.

The single most common confusion among first-time cosmetic injectable enquirers in Adelaide: anti-wrinkle and dermal filler are completely different treatments for completely different concerns, and the marketing often blurs that distinction. Here’s the practical version.

The simple rule

  • Anti-wrinkle treats lines caused by muscle movement (frown, forehead, crows’ feet, bunny lines)
  • Dermal filler treats issues caused by lost volume or anatomical structure (cheeks, tear troughs, lips, chin, jawline)

Different problem, different solution. Sometimes both at once.

Anti-wrinkle territory

Conditions that respond well to anti-wrinkle:

  • Vertical ”11s” between the brows (frown lines)
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crows’ feet (smile lines beside the eyes)
  • Bunny lines on the nose bridge
  • Lip-line “smoker’s lines”
  • Chin orange-peel dimpling
  • Downturned mouth corners (DAO)
  • Hypertrophic masseters (square jawline) — see masseter treatments

If the line is visible only when you move, anti-wrinkle is your treatment.

Filler territory

Conditions that respond well to filler:

  • Mid-face flattening (cheek volume loss)
  • Tear-trough hollows (under-eye shadows from volume loss)
  • Lip volume loss or shape refinement — see lip fillers
  • Recessed chin
  • Nasolabial folds (often via cheek support, not direct fold injection)
  • Jawline contouring or refinement
  • Marionette lines from mouth corner to chin

If the issue is “things have lost volume” or “I want a different shape”, filler is your treatment.

Both, sequentially

Many adult faces need both, often in this typical sequence:

  1. First: small doses of anti-wrinkle for dynamic upper-face lines (mid 20s to early 30s)
  2. Later: light dermal filler in cheeks or lips as volume changes (late 30s to 40s)
  3. Maintenance: regular anti-wrinkle plus periodic filler refresher

A skilled Adelaide injector sequences these — addressing the dynamic lines first because they continue etching into static lines if untreated, then adding volume work where it’s needed.

When the answer is “neither”

Sometimes the right answer to “should I get filler or anti-wrinkle” is “neither yet”. Examples:

  • Skin texture concerns are often better addressed with skin needling or chemical peels before injectable work
  • Pigmentation needs IPL or laser treatment — neither injectable does anything for this
  • Surface dryness or “tired” looking skin often improves with a HydraFacial series — see HydraFacial
  • Established skincare routine and SPF compliance often produces noticeable improvements without injectable work

A reputable Adelaide consultation will tell you when injectables aren’t the right starting point.

Combination treatment plans

A common adult Adelaide treatment plan might look like:

  • Anti-wrinkle every 3–4 months for upper face: $300–$700 per cycle
  • Cheek/mid-face filler refresh every 12–18 months: $1,000–$2,500 per session
  • Lip filler refresh every 9–12 months (if relevant): $450–$850 per syringe
  • Skin needling or HydraFacial 4–6 weeks apart for skin quality: per-session pricing

Annual investment varies enormously based on which combination you’re doing. A single area of anti-wrinkle annually: ~$800–$1,500. Comprehensive multi-modality plans: $4,000–$8,000+.
