If your face looks flatter, more hollow or less defined than it used to, you may be noticing volume change. It’s a normal part of ageing, and it’s one of the most common reasons people book a facial consultation. You won’t find many published prices for treating it in Adelaide. Many of the treatments discussed involve prescription-only medicines, which Australian law doesn’t allow to be advertised to the public, and the TGA treats a published price as advertising. Costs are worked out after an in-person assessment by a registered health practitioner and given to you in writing.

DermaFox Aesthetics arranges consultations and is not itself a medical or cosmetic practitioner. Any treatment decision is made with the registered health practitioner who assesses you.

Common volume concerns

  • Cheeks. A flatter mid-face, which can make the folds running from the nose to the mouth look deeper
  • Under-eye hollows. A shadowed or sunken look under the eyes. This can also come from genetics, pigmentation, thin skin or tiredness, not only volume change.
  • Chin and jaw profile. A less defined jawline, or a chin that looks out of balance with the rest of the face

Why volume changes

Volume change isn’t one thing. Over time, the fat pads of the face shrink and shift, the facial bones gradually change shape, and the skin loses collagen and elasticity. Weight loss, sun exposure, smoking and genetics all play a part. Two people with similar concerns can have quite different underlying causes. That’s why an assessment matters more than a general answer. Our guide to lines or volume loss explains how practitioners tell these concerns apart.

How costs are worked out

After assessing you, the practitioner explains which options may suit your concern. These may include skin treatments, changes to skincare and sun protection, prescription options that can only be discussed in a consultation, referral to a specialist, or doing nothing. A clear written quote usually covers:

  • Any consultation fee, confirmed before you book
  • The proposed plan in plain language, with the cost of each step
  • Whether review appointments are included
  • Cancellation and rescheduling terms
  • Time to think. You should be able to take the quote home and decide later.

Be cautious of any provider that advertises prices, discounts or “specials” for prescription treatments. That may mean they aren’t following Australian advertising rules.

What’s assessed

  • Your medical history, medicines, allergies and any previous cosmetic treatments
  • Whether you’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your face as a whole: proportions, skin quality, and how your face looks at rest and when it moves
  • Whether what you see is driven by volume change, skin laxity, pigmentation or a mix
  • What you’d like to change, why now, and what a realistic outcome looks like

Questions to ask

  1. What is your registration type, and can I check it on the Ahpra register?
  2. What do you think is causing the change I’m noticing?
  3. What are all my options, including skin treatments and doing nothing?
  4. What are the common and rare risks, and how would complications be managed?
  5. What would recovery involve, and when would I need a review?
  6. Can I have the full cost in writing?

Risks and suitability

Every cosmetic procedure carries risk, including rare but serious complications, and results vary between people. A practitioner should explain these clearly before you decide. Recovery varies; your practitioner will explain what to expect. Some people aren’t suitable for some treatments, for example during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or because of certain medical conditions or medicines. Cosmetic consultations are for adults aged 18 and over. Treatments that involve prescription medicines can only be considered after an in-person consultation with an appropriately qualified, registered health practitioner.
